Nervous about going to the dentist?
Whilst we would like to think that everyone looks forward to a visit to the dentist we know that some people get nervous about the prospect. This can range from worry about getting a filling to full blown Dentophobia.
The British Dental Association figures show that 25% of patients suffer from some form of anxiety before a visit to the dental surgery and 12% suffering severe anxiety so it is a common problem.
The most important thing is not to ignore the issue as this often means visits to the dentist are put off which in turn can lead to minor dental problems becoming more serious. Although it sounds obvious attending scheduled check ups will also help to catch any issues before they get worse - don’t wait until a problem develops to see your dentist.
If you are worried about visiting the dentist it is important that you make the dentist aware of this as good communication can be a big help. Here at Kilbarchan Dental Practice we are very experienced in dealing with nervous patients and work closely to put them at ease and work through any concerns, discuss the treatments and options. We are also one of the few practices in Renfrewshire able to offer IV sedation for extreme cases and I am about to complete a diploma in Dental Sedation And Anxiety so we can extend the range of sedation services for our patients. If you are not one of our patients you may want to ask your dentist what provision and training they have to make sure they are right for you.
