What dental hygiene tips do I need to look after my teeth this Christmas?
We’ve got more advice and tips about caring for your smile over the festive period as well as some ideas for Christmas presents!
There is no avoiding the fact that the endless supply of sweets, cakes and other sugary temptations is part and parcel of the Christmas experience. Enjoy a wee treat but try not to overindulge and try to eat your sweet treats in one go after a meal rather than picking at them throughout the day.
What foods should I avoid to look after my teeth?
You should also be wary of cooked starches such as crisps that break down into sugars, the dried fruit in Christmas cake and mince pies as well as sugar-loaded fizzy drinks. Try opting for water when you are thirsty and crudités or nuts for snacking – nuts offer a healthier alternative to crisps as they contain calcium and vitamin D that both promote good dental health.
If you are a wine lover it is better to drink white instead of red to avoid staining your teeth. Cheese is a great partner for wine - not only is it a rich source of calcium it helps balance out the PH in your mouth to cut down the damaging effects of acid and helps kill bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease.
Are you looking for Christmas gift ideas?
If you are looking for ideas for Christmas presents why not try an electric toothbrush as a stocking filler. A number of our patients have given teeth whitening treatments as gifts and our facial rejuvenation is also becoming increasingly popular. You might also want to consider trying our air-polishing treatment either before or after Christmas to remove unwanted stains from red wine, coffee and smoking.
