How should I look after my teeth?
How many times a day should I brush my teeth?
We all know that brushing twice a day is important but an ongoing oral health routine is the best way of keeping your smile looking great.
When should I floss?
Flossing only takes a minute and it gets rid of stubborn bits of food and plaque that you might miss with your toothbrush. The most important time to floss is before you go to bed and you can use an interdental brush instead if you find that easier.
Is eating between meals bad and what can I do to keep healthy teeth?
Why not try bringing a spare toothbrush into work and give your teeth a brush about an hour after lunch. If that is impractical then a quick rinse with a fluoride mouthwash can prevent plaque and gum disease. The NHS advice is not to brush immediately after eating as most foods contain acid which can soften the enamel so brushing can wear it away. Also try not to eat too much between meals as this just will add to the amount of acid your mouth produces.
What is the best toothbrush to use for adults and children?
A good toothbrush is also important – a small head and a compact, angled arrangement of long and short, round-end, soft or medium bristles are best for most people. We recommend using an Oral B professional care electric toothbrush - the heads that are used have indicators on them which let you know when it is time to change them so you know your teeth will always be getting the best quality care.
How often should get a new toothbrush?
There’s no harm in using a mix of good toothbrushes as long as you replace your toothbrush or attachments at least every 3 months. Of course brushing properly is equally as important and children under 7 should always be helped or supervised, if in any doubt ask your dentist or hygienist about the correct procedure for brushing teeth.
Should I get advice and teeth scale and polish from a good dentist?
Finally, make sure you are signed up with a good dentist and attend your check-ups every 6 months. Our dentists and hygienist here at Kilbarchan Dental Practice will make sure that any plaque build up is attended to with a thorough scale and polish.
