How do I use an Electric Toothbrush?

Here at Kilbarchan Dental Practice we are big fans of electric toothbrushes as they are proven to remove 100% more plaque than traditional manual toothbrushes if used correctly! To help you get the most out of them we’ve put together our top tips:

How do I brush using an electric toothbrush?
1. Remember the brushing action is very different from that of a manual toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes oscillate and rotate at high speed so you simply need to guide the brush head to the areas that need cleaning.

Don't forget to charge your toothbrush!
2. Make sure your toothbrush is charged, there is nothing worse than running out of power half-way through and most have indicators to let you know if your charge is low.

What angle should I brush at using an electric toothbrush?
3. Use a fluoride toothpaste on a dry brush and hold the brush at a 45 degree angle as you would a manual toothbrush.

What is the technique for using an electric toothbrush?

4. Start with the outside surfaces of the teeth. Guide the brush head slowly from tooth to tooth, holding the brush head in place for a few seconds against each tooth before moving on to the next one. Follow along with the shape of each tooth and the curve of the gums.

5. Repeat on the inside surfaces of the teeth and on the chewing surfaces of the teeth as well as behind the back teeth. Don’t press too hard –some of the better brushes have a pressure sensor to warn you if you do!

How long do I brush for?
6. Brush for a minimum of 2 minutes – most have built in timers and usually vibrate at 30 second intervals so you can focus on a quarter of your mouth at a time.

Should I brush my tongue?
7. Brush your tongue gently from back to front to get rid of even more bacteria.

Remember to spit rather than rinse
8. Spit rather than rinse when you have finished.

How often should I brush my teeth and replace my toothbrush?
9. Remember to brush at least twice a day and replace the brush head at least every 3 months.
